New low-fare airline from Barbados to connect Guyana

A new airline is soon to be launched in Barbados that offers low-fare travel services to Guyana and the Caribbean as it seeks to promote connectivity and passenger growth as enjoyed by the rest of the world.

Airone will be launching in a few weeks on the island and Business Development Director Ian and Robbie Burns from Airone Ventures Limited, met President Bharrat Jagdeo on Monday to inform him of the venture.

Airone will be traversing Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago and Bridgetown, Barbados.

Ian Burns told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that the venture has been in the making for four years and was sparked by the need to ensure the Caribbean benefits from aviation growth.

“The rest of the world has benefited considerably from aviation’s perspective over … the Caribbean hasn’t benefited from that growth and the missing link has been a low-fare airline,” Burns said.

He believes that such an airline is “fantastic” for people in the Region and the Diaspora.

Jagdeo has been lamenting what he described as an “unconscionable monopoly” on airfare increases, by some airlines and even considered the State re-entering the airline business to change the situation.

He made reference to a situation where travellers sometimes pay more from Guyana to Trinidad and Tobago than travellers pay from Trinidad and Tobago to the US noting that for Guyana to benefit from an open economy there is a need for services that are appropriately priced and from which customers get value for their money.
