An Open Letter to the President of Guyana

Dear President Granger,

It is with great dismay that I am persuaded to write about the disappointing conduct of your appointed officers, with particular reference to the pending case of the un-registering of the Guyana Airways Corporation.

Dear President Granger,

It is with great dismay that I am persuaded to write about the disappointing conduct of your appointed officers, with particular reference to the pending case of the un-registering of the Guyana Airways Corporation.

You will remember clearly that you opened the door to Guyanese in the diaspora to come home and invest in “our” country.  Many of us have been happy to do so because we are not only investing in our country but also in our human resources.  It is known that the University of Guyana produces hundreds of graduates each year and many of them remain unemployed for long periods of time.

Guyana Airways Corporation plans to hire Citizens of Guyana, thus creating hundreds of jobs for the jobless in the country.  It will also be an airline that you will be proud of.  If the owners of the “other” airline were smart enough, they would have known that the name “Guyana Airways Corporation” could have been resurrected.  The other airline had ample opportunity to get the name if they had done their due diligence. They had six months to object to us using the name but they didn’t.  In the game of life, you win some and you lose some.

When Guyana Airways rendered applications to the Civil Aviation Department two years ago, we were asked about the legality of the name and have explained to them over and over again, that they had an equal opportunity to grab the name and did not do so.  Are they not aware that, there is a certain time-frame for one to back out of a contract.  Two years???  Really!!!!!  They have got to be kidding or are they asleep?  I hope that your duly appointed officers know that trying to un-register a company is like trying to un-ring a bell.  They have simply crossed the line and have embarrassed you and your position.  You may want to re-examine your choices for some of your representatives.

We have seen the approval of American Airlines come into fruition in the past month.  They were bold enough to publish a newsflash indicating their entry into Guyana, without even consulting the Civil Aviation Department – gross eye-pass and that was no problem, they got the prize.  On the other hand, the Guyana Airways Corporation has seen nothing but harassment from your officials. I would like to know, how many jobs will American Airlines bring to our beloved country where unemployment numbers are so high? It reminds me of my tenure at a Guyanese corporation, when the General Manager, at a meeting, told the staff that all of them were like crabs in a barrel, as soon as one gets up, the others pull them down.  What is happening to our country?

Mr. President, now is your time to act.  You have to stand up for something or you will fall for nothing.  I urge that you call in the entities involved and get to the bottom of this mess that your appointees are creating all because, they have vested interest in the “other airline”.

Sincerely,

Donna DeGroot
Director
Guyana Airways Corporation
