Guyana and the Threat of the Ebola Virus

At any one time in Guyana there is always a small contingent of foreigners from the areas of high incidence of the Ebola virus.

At any one time in Guyana there is always a small contingent of foreigners from the areas of high incidence of the Ebola virus.

Anyone who has visited the region where the outbreak is ongoing and co-mingle with a subject prior to them visiting Guyana poses a serious threat to the Guyanese population. The potential carrier can come overland from Venezuela, Suriname or Brazil all of whom have an abundance of visitors from countries close to the troubled region.

The Government of Guyana must be very vigilant and enact policies and procedures to mitigate the threat without causing a panic among the population.

Documenting the travel history of visitors (to determine a risk factor) and their local addresses in Guyana will go a long way into preparing a course of action in the event of suspected infection. Providing them with contact information about the medical facilities in Guyana and notifying them of their obligation to report any illness (to the identified authorities) that could be linked to the Ebola virus could also contribute to an early warning system.
