Today, June 5, World Environment Day is being celebrated under the theme “Raise your voice, not the sea level.” It is an opportunity for everyone to realize not only the responsibility to care for the Earth but to become agents of change.

The United States Embassy is pleased to support civic volunteerism and the efforts of Guyanese citizens to improve their communities and their country. On Sunday, June 1, Ambassador D. Brent Hardt launched the new and innovative chapter of the U.S. Embassy’s environmental project – “Guyana Shines: Keep Guyana Beautiful.” Together with the NGO, Youths for Guyana, and private sector partners including ExxonMobil, Republic Bank, Caribbean Containers, Inc., and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we are committed to the long-term process to change the environmental history of Guyana. It represents a significant step forward on the path toward maintaining a clean environment. A clean environment is important for public health, for maintaining Guyana’s extraordinary biodiversity, and for encouraging tourism development.

Guyana Shines has been active throughout Guyana over the past two years in encouraging and mobilizing members of Guyanese communities and schoolchildren to maintain a clean environment and address the serious littering challenge through education and action.
