I extend my congratulations to President elect David Granger, Prime Minister Elect Moses Nagamootoo and the people of Guyana. It is a day filled with happiness for Guyanese who have spoken by way of the ballot boxes to elect a new government.

It is indeed time to celebrate because the peaceful transition of government is one that all must celebrate and be proud, not only of the citizens but the leadership for their ability to keep their exuberant supporters focused on the big picture of winning the elections.

When the celebrations are over we must remember several objectives that are imperative for the success of Guyana and Guyanese.

  • Although the APNU/AFC collation won the elections with just over 50 % of the votes, they must govern for 100% of the population.
  • Unity and cooperation amongst all Guyanese must be paramount and the pre and post-election energy must be channeled into increased accountability, responsibility, performance and production. The government will need all hands on board to move this nation forward.
  • Some of us might not be as vocal as others but that does not give anyone the right to overlook the existence and contributions of others, we are all in this together.
  • Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.

I do wish my fellow citizens the very best and as demonstrated by many Guyanese who have ventured abroad, we are talented, we are hard workers, we are smart, we are brave, we might not all do it in the same way but we are successful. Let’s do this for Guyana.

From the Chorus of THE SONG OF GUYANA’S CHILDREN By W. Hawley-Bryant

Onward, upward, may we ever go
Day by day in strength and beauty grow,
Till at length we each of us may show,
What Guyana’s sons and daughters can be.
