Former Commissioner of Police, Henry Alphonso Fraser, died around 1:00 am yesterday morning at St Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was 88 years old.

Mr. Fraser was the owner of a property management firm that manages rental properties for Guyanese Living abroad and was always “on the job.”

Ms. Fraser commented that earlier in the day Mr. Fraser complained of a pain in his back and after some convincing at around 11:00 pm he was taken to the hospital where he was admitted. He was administered oxygen and the relatives left for the night. At around 6:00 am the family received a call that notified them of his passing.

Mr. Henry Fraser was born in Suriname to Guyanese parents on December 02, 1922 and grew up on Plantation Albion with his parents and four siblings. He enlisted in the British Guiana Police Force in 1941 where he attended the now Felix Austin Police College.

He was promoted to Lance Corporal in January 1954 then became a Sergeant after skipping the rank of Corporal. He then attained the rank of Inspector and later the same year Assistant Superintendent. He was transferred to the Special Branch where he was promoted to Assistant Commissioner and shortly after the death of his predecessor Mr. Carl Austin he took office as the Commissioner of Police in 1973, a position he held for four years.

In January Mr. Henry Fraser was featured in the local media as a “Special Person.”
