The Arthur Chung Convention Center was funded by a grant provided by the Government of the People’s Republic of China and constructed at a cost of approximately US$ 8M.

It was originally named Guyana International Convention Centre (GICC) and was renamed to the Arthur Chung Convention Center on May 20, 2015 by President David Granger in honor of Guyana’s first President who served from 1970 to 1980. President Chung died in 2008 at the age of 90. He was the first ethnic Chinese (Hakka) Head of State in a non-Asian country. Chung was awarded Guyana’s highest national award, the Order of Excellence.

The Center is located just past Bel Air Spring heading east on the Railway Embankment and before the Caricom Secretariat. The People’s Republic of China delivered the multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art Center to the Government and people of Guyana on February 16, 2006. The complex features a main conference hall with a seating capacity of 372, five smaller conference rooms, a business center and a restaurant.
